Restaurant Industry

During my college years, I supported myself and paid for my education through the restaurant industry – initially as a bartender before being recruited as a restaurant manager. This experience led to my involvement in opening several restaurants, including an equity interest in one concept that grew to five locations.

Commercial Real Estate Industry

During my 12-year commercial real estate career, I represented local, regional, and Fortune 500 companies in acquiring office space and managing the design/construction process in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, and other major markets across the continental United States.

I began my real estate career in 1984 with The Gallini Company, a small but successful company known for land brokerage and office flex space development, and specialized in the newly burgeoning field of commercial tenant representation.

In late 1986, The Staubach Company, owned by legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, recruited me to join their tenant representation division. The Staubach Company, which JLL acquired in 2008, was an early pioneer and major force in developing and spreading the concept of tenant representation across the country. In 1988, I received recognition as one of The Staubach Company's top six producers.

In 1989, I joined John Amend, the primary innovator, and architect of The Staubach Company's tenant representation and construction management process, as a founding member of The Amend Group. I served The Amend Group as EVP, COO, and CAO. During my tenure, The Amend Group, headquartered in Dallas, added offices in Houston and Atlanta while expanding its service capabilities to include in-house architectural design and space planning. The Dallas Business Journal recognized me as a Heavy Hitter in tenant representation on several occasions; however, much of my focus and client engagements were outside the DFW area. In addition to representing clients and serving in various executive capacities, my primary role centered on training, developing, coaching, and managing our real estate professionals and expanding company offices.

Residential Real Estate Industry

During my 24-year residential real estate career, I independently owned and operated a primarily residential real estate brokerage company in a three-county area of Northeast Texas that was #1 for 18 consecutive years in this highly competitive market.

I acquired two independently owned brokerage companies in September 1996 and January 1997 and later merged these companies, creating Johnson Monroe, Realtors. Our three-county market featured Cedar Creek Lake, the third largest lake in Texas, a primary waterfront home market for the DFW area, and an increasingly active farm and ranch market.

The critical factors in our company's success over the years include —

  • Hiring high-quality people, virtually all of whom had no prior real estate experience.
  • Providing a supportive, people-centric yet competitive culture.
  • Retaining our home-grown talent.
  • Being the only owner or leader of a real estate company or office in our market focused solely on training, developing, supporting, and coaching agents while never actively listing and selling property.

Our program helped people with no real estate experience establish and build successful real estate careers for over twenty years. Over this period, no other company hired, trained, and developed more agents with no prior real estate experience that became top 10 or 25 producers in our market than our company. And the year after selling my company, 7 of the market’s top 15 agents, including 5 out of the top 9, began and spent all or a significant portion of their careers with our company before 2021. And none of these seven exceptional people had any prior real estate experience when they joined our company.

Executive/Professional Coaching

After completing a sale of my company to Ebby Halliday Real Estate, an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway, in October of 2020, I had a continuing desire to utilize my experience and knowledge to positively impact the lives of others. This desire led me to obtain my professional certification in Executive and Professional Coaching from the highly regarded and International Coaching Federation (ICF) Level 2 accredited Organizational Behavior and Coaching Program at the University of Texas at Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management. I selected this program because it employs methods and techniques from evidence-based psychological theories and models proven to assist people in their development or change efforts. In addition, this proven coaching process helps in transformative learning and constructing solutions as a path to enhance life experience and achieve professional/personal goals.

During the majority of my career, my main focus was leading, training, developing, and coaching real estate professionals to help them create and build successful careers. Through Executive and Professional Coaching, I am continuing this focus while expanding beyond the real estate industry to work with professionals, business owners, and corporate leaders from other sectors who desire to move beyond the status quo and create more purposeful, productive, and fulfilling careers/lives.
