Set in Your Ways
Have you ever known someone "set in their ways?" Meaning someone who will not consider changing or trying something new, even if it is in their best interest. Generally, they will not listen, and the harder you press, the more obstinate they become.
Most people probably think of older adults as those most likely to be "set in their ways." However, from my observations and what I have read, it is certainly not exclusive to older adults. And even though their mindset, thought process, routine, or pattern of behavior would appear detrimental to their best interests, they are familiar, comfortable, and well-worn paths that are hard to deviate from.
The question is, are they set in their ways or stuck in their ways? Are they content just as they are, or are they stuck? Maybe they do not know how to change or wish they could but won't admit it or are afraid of it. Even more, they might not recognize they are stuck.
Either way, it is an easy way to avoid trying a new, possibly even better way. While it can be difficult, embracing change opens the door to new experiences, opportunities for growth, and improved relationships. It may seem like a risk, but it also might be better than that old familiar, seemingly comfortable rut.
